Kerala is blessed with a large number of water bodies both fresh water and brackish water rivers, interconnected backwaters (Kayals) ,estuaries and backwaters. The state is also endowed with vast resources in terms of ponds & tanks, rivers & canals , reservoirs ,lakes and other water bodies. These water bodies make the land green and fertile and contribute a rich resource of inland producton. The brackish water resources of the state comprise of backwaters Pokkali and Kaipadu fields distributed in Ernakulam, Thrissur , Alapuzha and kannur districts which are traditionally used for prawn filtration during summer season.
