Schemes implemented by Department of Fisheries for conservation of marine resources and safety of fishermen.
ډ The Department of Fisheries is implementing schemes worth Rs. 32.4 crore in 2022-23 with the objective of conserving fish resources and ensuring the safety of fishermen.
ډ A scheme of Rs 30 lakh has been implemented in 2021-22 for inclusion of Square Mesh Cod End (Irelira) in trawl nets to avoid small fish getting entangled in the net during fishing. A total of 210 people have benefited from the scheme. An amount of Rs. 30 lakh has been earmarked for the project. This will benefit 200 beneficiaries.
ډ In 2021-22, 483 insulated fish boxes have been distributed to traditional fishermen to ensure that the fish caught from the sea reach the shore without any harm. In 2022-23, a project worth Rs 1 crore is being implemented to distribute insulated ice boxes to 800 fishermen. In the first phase, 604 insulated ice boxes have been distributed.
ډ For the purpose of conservation of fish resources and safety of fishermen, smart cameras have been installed in all major harbours of the state and for its control and coordination, a master control room is functioning in the Directorate of Fisheries and a regional control room is functioning in the fisheries stations of Vizhinjam, Vypeen and Beypore.
ډ Rescue boats, including lifeguards, are operating in all coastal districts of Kerala to enforce fishing laws and rescue fishermen in danger.
ډ For the first time in the country, 3 Marine Ambulances are functioning at Vizhinjam, Vypeen and Beypore centres with state-of-the-art facilities to ensure first aid to fishermen in distress at sea and to ensure prompt evacuation and follow-up treatment.
ډ 9 model fishing boats are being prepared in the coastal districts to educate the fishermen about the equipment and systems required in a boat going to the sea for fishing under the Fisheries Regulation Act. Initial steps are being taken.
ډ 100 rescue squads have been appointed in 15 harbours in Kerala to rescue fishermen in distress while fishing in the sea and to implement and coordinate the activities of the department in the harbours.
ډ A scheme is being implemented to re-train 200 fishermen who have successfully completed their training in Goa and whose certificates have expired. So far, 175 people have been trained.
ډ With a view to reduce the fishing pressure in the coastal waters and to enable traditional fishermen to take up deep sea fishing, a scheme to provide 10 deep sea fishing units is being implemented. Cochin Shipyard Limited (Udupi) has been given the contract for this purpose. In the first phase, construction of 3 deep sea fishing vessels has been completed.
ډ A scheme is being implemented to procure towing tractors to help traditional fishing vessels to land in the sea for fishing and towing them to the shore after fishing.
ډ The srunk, engine driver and deck hand of the fishing boats operating in Kerala are being trained by EKHERT in Kochi. The training of 60 people has been completed. The remaining 30 are undergoing training.
ډ Under the scheme of providing engine subsidy to traditional fishing vessels, a maximum of Rs.30,000 / -per engine is provided to 100 fishermen.
ډ A maximum of Rs.10,000 / -per unit is provided to 200 fishermen as subsidy for fishing nets.
ډ A pilot project is being implemented to supply waste-free, sustainable and economical engine powered by non-kerosene fuels to fishermen.
