G.O .(Rt) 257/09/ F & PD dated 14/5/2009 Government of Kerala have decided to constitute and register an agency viz. NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FISHERIES ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT (NIFAM) ERNAKULAM under the “Travancore-Cochin Literary Scientific and charitable societies Act 1955”.
ACTIVITIES
Fisheries play a crucial role in the overall economic development of the State. The sustained development of the Fisheries sector imparting training to the functionaries and in turn to the Farmers/ Fishermen in areas of special interest is the most crucial factor. With the complexity in technology the task of dissemination of knowledge and skill become complex which warrants sustained and systematic efforts on the part of Department of Fisheries. Therefore giving in service training to Fisheries personnel as well as fish farmers and fishermen assumes greater significance in the overall fisheries development strategy.
NIFAM is also extending training to personals of Departments like Local Self Government, Revenue, Survey, Fire Force, Police, Technical Education, Kudumbasree, etc. In addition NIFAM is also conducting On Job Training for VHSC students. NIFAM is looking forward to extend these facilities and training to improve the knowledge and skill of other Department personnels .
OBJECTIVE
• Create knowledge base, skill development, attitudinal changes and capacity building among stakeholders through core programmes like short-term training, interactive workshops, seminar and discussions, sponsored programmes, specialized programmes and international programmes.
The institute will:
- Act as an assimilation and dissemination centre of the outputs of national and international research organizations in the field of fisheries and allied subjects to the stakeholders.
- To equip the fisheries administrators of the country to cope with the changingscenario in fisheries administration, conservation and management.
- To function as a forum to create awareness among stakeholders about the Code of Conduct for responsible Fisheries of the FAO and to fine-tune the national andState Fisheries Policies in line with the code.
- By utilizing the latest facilities in IT, Internet and Electronic communication media, gaining access to information worldwide and making it available to the Department of Fisheries and allied institutions.
- To serve as a national forum, of scientists, administrators, farmers and other stakeholders for interaction in contemporary issues related to fisheries.
- Exploring the possibilities and adopting possible on-line fisheries education and training, e-commerce etc.
- To provide facilities for reference, data processing, documentation, production of extension aids and tools, publication and depository museum.
- To provide the most modern facilities for assimilation and dissemination of information in the field of fisheries sector. For this facility computerized documentation, publication, modern library etc. will be provided
- Total personality development of the trainees will also be the objectives of the NIFAM. Therefore, while designing each training module, emphasis will be given on various aspects of personality development, attitudinal change, group interaction, group Cohesiveness etc.

FACILITIES AT NIFAM
NIFAM is presently having two training halls, out of which one is air conditioned with a seating capacity of 35 and the other with a capacity of 50-60 persons. We have facility for accommodating upto 60 trainees with canteen facilities. The training halls are equipped with modern electronic equipments.
